Etymology: Onomatopoetic word; genetically or elementary cognate: Alb. lap `id.', of dogs, cats, Slav., e. g. Russ. lópatь `burst, (Germ.) devour', Lith. lapènti `absorb greedily' (of swines), Germ., e. g. OE lapian, MHG leffen `gulp down' (may have IE *b, like Lat. lambō), NHG (with geminate) lappen, Fr. laper `id.' (WP. 2, 383f., Pok. 651, W.-Hofmann s. lambō, Vasmer and Fraenkel Wb. s. v., Sturtevant Lang. 17, 6). - As λάπτω, λέλαφα compared with λάψω, λάψαι can be secondary, Schulze KZ 52, 105 (= Kl. Schr. 372) reminds of Balt. and Slav. synonymes with k, e. g. Lith. làkti, Russ. lokátь 'λάπτειν', to which λάψω, λάψαι (if with IE. kʷ) may agree. - Cf. λαφύσσω. - As PIE had no *a, the word will rather be Pre-Greek.
